JODY OLSEN

DIRECTOR OF THE

PEACE CORPS

Keynote Address

Dr. Josephine (Jody) Olsen, PhD, MSW, was sworn into office as the 20th Director of the Peace Corps in March 2018. Dr. Olsen began her career as a Peace Corps Volunteer, serving in Tunisia from 1966-1968. She has since served the agency in multiple leadership positions—as Acting Director in 2009; Deputy Director from 2002-2009; Chief of Staff from 1989-1992; Regional Director, North Africa, Near East, Asia, Pacific from 1981-1984; and Country Director in Togo from 1979-1981. Prior to returning to the Peace Corps in 2018, Dr. Olsen served as Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland-Baltimore School of Social Work and Director of the University’s Center for Global Education Initiatives. In this capacity she developed and directed inter-professional global health projects for students in dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work. She also oversaw health research projects in Malawi while teaching courses on international social work, global social policy, and global women and children’s health. Throughout her career, Dr. Olsen has championed the expansion of service, learning and international opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds.

HAILEY SADLER

Photography and Peace

Formerly a Congressional Communications Director, Hailey Sadler is an international documentary photographer based out of Washington, DC who works at the intersection of art, journalism, and advocacy. Her work focuses on the resiliency and fragility of the human spirit amidst conflict, trauma, and displacement.

DR TONY JENKINS

MANAGING DIRECTOR INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE ON PEACE EDUCATION

Sustainable Peace After Conflict

​Dr. Jenkins is a lecturer in the Justice and Peace Studies program at Georgetown University, and has over 17 years of experience directing and designing peacebuilding and international educational programs. His work outside the university focuses on the development and advocacy of peace education in theory and practice. He advances this work as the Managing Director of the International Institute on Peace Education and as the Coordinator of the Global Campaign for Peace Education.

Barton Goldenberg is Rotary District Governor for District 7620 and is the Founder and President of ISM, Inc., a strategic consulting company specialized in the creation & implementation of customer strategy. Currently, he is implementing a $81,500 Rotary Foundation global grant project in Kenya.

DAVID JOHNSON

DIRECTOR OF C4ADS

Technology and Conflict

LTC David Johnson is Executive Director of C4ADS a nonprofit think-tank dedicated to providing data-driven analysis and evidence-based reporting on global conflict and transnational security issues. Their motto is "Innovation for Peace." David is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and served 23 years in the US Army in the Infantry and Special Forces. Prior to joining C4ADS, Dave was Director of Digital Security Products in the Software and Solutions Group at Intel Corporation.

Sustainable Peace After Conflict

​Peter has been a member of Rotary since 1976 and has received a number of commendations, including the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award together with the Service above Self Award and the Citation for Meritorious Service. He retired from his position as a senior international attorney at the World Bank in 2009. He currently serves as the Dean of the Rotary Representative Network.

The Pitfalls and Potential of Religion in Peacebuilding

​Omer Kanat is Director of the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), a human rights research and advocacy organization. From 1999 to 2009 Mr. Kanat was Senior Editor at Radio Free Asia’s Uyghur Service, where he covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has been serving as the Executive Committee Chairman of the World Uyghur Congress since November 2017, and was formerly the conference’s VIce President.

Sustainable Peace After Conflict

Vlora Çitaku currently serves as the Ambassador of Kosovo to the United States. She formerly served as Consul General of Kosovo in New York. Before joining

Kosovo diplomatic corps, Vlora served as Minister for European integration of the Republic of

Kosovo. She was noted as one of the most successful ministers of the 2011-2014 Kosovo

government.

DON WALLACE

CHAIRMAN, INTERNATIONAL LAW INSTITUTE

The Building Blocks of Economic Growth as a Foundation for Sustainable Peace

​With 60 years as an attorney, 50 years as a professor at Georgetown Law, and 46 years on the board at the International Law Institute of which he is chairman, Prof. Don Wallace is a preeminent authority in international law and foreign affairs. He has counseled government institutions, societal icons, major corporations, and everyone in between. In addition to MSK, Prof. Wallace currently teaches courses on Investor-State Dispute Resolution and Constitutional Aspects of Foreign Affairs at Georgetown Law.

SENIOR EXPERT MEL INTEGRITY

The Building Blocks of Economic Growth as a Foundation for Sustainable Peace

Kathryn is a Senior Expert in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) who recently relocated to Integrity’s Washington, DC office after spending four years working on the Syria crisis response. As a conflict and stabilization specialist, she focuses primarily on MEL in fragile and conflict-affected states (FCAS). Between 2014-2019, she led Integrity’s Third-Party Monitoring of a multi-donor security & justice stabilization program in Syria.

The Role of Peace Corp and Rotary Peace Scholars in Forming World Leaders

​Kristin Post is a social scientist at Marine Corps University and a former Rotary World Peace Fellow. She has published peer reviewed articles on health security, cross-cultural communication, and research methodology. She first worked with Marines when she deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, where she conducted outside-the-wire research as an embedded cultural liaison.

​Frank is the co-founder, former vice chairman, of two leading international non-governmental organizations fighting corruption -- Transparency International and the Partnership for Transparency Fund.  Frank, born and educated in the UK, has lived in Washington DC since 1974. He teaches a graduate course on corruption, conflict resolution and security at Georgetown University, USA. Frank is a lecturer and writer with a regular column on corruption for theGlobalist.com.

Role of the Peace Corps and Rotary Peace Scholars in Forming World Leaders

Glenn Blumhorst is President and CEO of National Peace Corps Association, an organization at the center of a community of more than 180 grassroots affiliate groups and 235,000 individuals who share the Peace Corps experience. Prior to joining the NPCA, Glenn enjoyed an illustrious 18-year career with ACDI/VOCA, most recently leading the establishment and substantial growth of ACDI/VOCA’s worldwide Community Stabilization and Development practice area as Managing Director. He also served as Country Representative and Chief of Party on several major USAID-funded projects throughout Central and South America.

 

SHANTAYANAN DEVARAJAN

SENIOR DIRECTOR OF THE WORLD BANK

Building Blocks of Equitable Economic Growth as a Foundation for Sustainable Peace

Shantayanan Devarajan is Professor of the Practice of International Development at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service.  He spent 28 years at the World Bank where he was most recently the Senior Director for Development Economics and previously the Chief Economist of the  Middle East and North Africa Region. He was a director of the World Development Report 2004, Making Services Work for Poor People. Before 1991, he was on the faculty of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
